Paint on location on the grounds of beautiful Ridgeland Mansion, the historic 18th century Federal-style house located in west Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. Landscape painting topics will include color mixing to achieve a sense of light and air, capturing time of day, compositional fundamentals, and sound painting practices for oil, acrylic, or pastel painting. Students are responsible for their own transportation.

The Arboretum at Haverford College Plein Air Painting

Beginning Earth Day April 22,23,24 2025 from 10 AM to 2 PM

A rare opportunity to paint and explore meadows, gardens and wooded

areas of the 216 acre Haverford campus.

Plenty of parking, and shelter if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

Haverford College was founded in 1833 by members of the Religious Society of Friends.

Duck Pond

3.5 acres with adjacent log cabin known as the Skating House.

for those past years when the pond used to freeze over.

The Treaty Elm

A descendent of the tree linked to encounters between the Lenape People and William Penn in the 17 century.

Numerous architectural structures to paint including

Founders Hall

Also a section of curated conifers call the Ryan Pinetum.

Haverfarm an agricultural area worked  by community members.

And the Nature Trail 2.2 course running around the perimeter of the college.

Plein Air Landscape Painting  

At Cape May Point Arts and Science Center, 

May 5,6,7,8, 2025 Price $400.

On location at Historic Cape May, New Jersey. Two hours from Philadelphia.   10am-2pm

Join plein-air painter Joe Sweeney for a long weekend painting retreat in Cape May, New Jersey. Experience small town hospitality while painting the landscape/seascape of Cape May, including Cape May Point, the Cove with sweeping vistas, Cape May Lighthouse, and Sunset Beach.

Rain location: Many

Learn to paint efficiently out-of-doors with tips on choosing a prime location, reading the weather and light at a particular time of day and setting up a landscape palette. Featuring demonstration and lecture on painting surfaces, materials, mediums, compositional drawing and making color studies. Geared towards oil, acrylic and pastel, but experienced watercolorists are welcome.

Joseph Sweeney is a professional landscape painter living in Ardmore, PA. He received a BFA in Painting and Drawing from the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) and an MFA from Penn State University. He has taught for many years at area institutions and art centers including PAFA, the University of the Arts, Wayne Art Center, Woodmere Art Museum and Chester Springs Yellow Springs Studio. His work has received numerous awards and is included in many public and private institutions, collections and museums.
